Why r engagement rings so expensive?
I've seen commercials where they say these ear rings are 1 carat each and they sell for $599. So why are 1 carat engagement rings so much more money? I know it can't be the band that is making up the difference.

- Because people will pay alot for something like that! It's all in what the consumer will pay! Everyone wants a beautiful wedding ring because they are going to wear it FOREVER(hopefully...) And almost everyone in our culture will have 1 (or more) during their life time. Therefore the people selling them can jack up the price and they will still sell
- First of all de Beers has a monopoly on the market and can kind of make diamonds any price they want. Second....do you think those earrings were that nice...maybe they weren't. Diamonds are all about the 4 C's - cut, color, clarity, and carat. A flawless diamond....jesus, those are expensive!
- Engagement rings aren't expensive; the rings being pushed by commercialism and marketing are expensive though, somehow suggesting you must have one of their $600-$1000 rings. They are the only 'real' rings and you aren't 'normal' without one. There's also that stupid rule that a wedding ring should cost 3 months salary. Says who? You can get whatever you want as an engagement ring as well as a wedding ring. My wife and I just got each other rings that symbolized something important to us, respectively. Do what you wish though but you'd just be buying into the BS.
- the reason 1 carat rings are more than ear rings is because it's not one solid stone... which takes longer, and costs more... but the best place to shop for an engagement ring is an antique store... they have amazing rings
- Usually, engagement rings are expensive if the one single diamond weights 1 Kt but if earrings are 1KTW (karat total weight) it means that the stones are smaller so they are less expensive. Other than that, you have to compare the 4C's (Carat, Cut, Color, Clarity). Usually a diamond ring requires also the cut to be more precise because when you place it on it's bed (setting), it has to reflect the maximum light and earrings you can't see them as well.
- Hi, I can understand your confusion about the cost of diamonds. But there's much more to the cost than just the carat. The color, clarity and quality all make a difference in the price. For example, a very clear stone with little color will cost more than a larger stone with a yellow tinge. And the clarity, or amount of imperfections, plays a role as well. If you are worried about the cost, why not consider other choices, such as Moissanite, a rare minerals that is brilliant but costs less than a diamond. Or what about other gems such as a ruby, emerald, or even a pearl? Who says that an engagement ring has to be a diamond (beside the diamond industry!).
