What are the pros and cons of "eco" engagement rings?

Eco rings are rings that are environmentally friendly, i.e. they use recycled gold and man-made diamonds. The rationale is that gold and diamond mining are damaging to the environment and exploit human labor; thus, by using pre-owned gold and creating diamonds in a laboratory rather than getting them from the ground, we can minimize the negative impact of jewelry-making on the environment as much as possible. GreenKarat is an example of a company that makes eco jewelry.

  1. oh please....do you want a recycled ring? really?!
  2. Are you serious? Don't know where I've been, but haven't heard of this. I don't see anything wrong with the "recycled" gold, but if I decide I want a diamond I want a real one. Don't know the pros & cons since I haven't heard of them, but what do you know about cost?
  3. good grief. Don't you have a relative that would hand down a ring? That is environmentally friendly. I suppose if both of you want it that is an ok way to go.
  4. The kind of engagement ring you chose is a decision between the two people being engaged. If you and your fiance want "eco" rings, then go for it. But if you know someone who is getting engaged, don't try to force them into it if they are not "into" that kind of thing.
