Where did the practice of exchanging engagement & wedding rings come from? Marriage is an ancient institution,but the practice of exchanging engagment & wedding rings is a very recent & modern one,as far as I know,so,who started it and why?

Ideas for a modern/rock wedding? My Fiance and I both love rock/punk rock music, and our wedding song is by Rise Against, and my engagement ring is a black diamond. How should I sell my wedding jewelry from a previous marriage? I am still holding onto my wedding set from a marriage that ended 6 years ago. It is not what you would call an up-to-date set. It's not very modern. It is two rings, one is an engagement ring and one is a plain band. Both are yellow gold, and the engagement ring contains several diamonds totaling 1ct. It's not worth too much...I know that. I just don't want to get a ridiculously low amount for it. I think that's why I held on to it. I can't "trade-up" because it came from Service Merchandise, which is now out of business. Any suggestions to getting a decent, or fair, price for this set?
